Retrieving e-mail with Outlook Express
This page will teach you how to set up Microsoft Outlook Express to retrieve e-mail from your OfficeOnWeb POP accounts. To configure Outlook Express, follow the instructions below.
- Open Outlook Express and choose "Tools" from the menu bar.
- Choose "Accounts" and click on the mail tab when the "Internet Accounts" manager window
appears.
- Click on the "Add" button and then on "Mail". The Internet Connection Wizard will walk
you through the setup process.
- First, it will ask for a display name. Normally your mail has these headers:
to: joe@schmoe.com
from: bob@officeonweb.net
but choosing a display name of "Robert G. Davis" will tell Outlook to write this at the top of your outgoing mail messages:
to: Joe@schmoe.com
from: Robert G. Davis <bob@officeonweb.net>
- Then, the wizard will ask for the e-mail address that you want people to reply to. If you type bob@officeonweb.net,
that would result in this text being written on all of your outgoing mail.
- After that, you will be asked for your server information. Your incoming mail server is a POP3 and
its name is the same as your domain name (if your Internet address is "www.yourbiz.com", then your POP3 server's name would be "yourbiz.com").
- The fourth step in the process is that the wizard will ask about your SMTP server for outgoing mail. We recommend
using the SMTP server of your ISP (officeonweb would be smtp.safepages.com, earthlink would be earthlink.net, etc.), but if that fails to operate properly, you may try to use your domain name
here. (If your ISP is AOL or another proprietary system, you should use your domain name, "yourbiz.com"
as your SMTP server name.)
- Fifth, Outlook Express will ask for your account name and password. When you signed up for service
with Office On Web you chose a user identification name (UID) to access ftp and e-mail. For example, if you chose bob as a UID and ickyigh
as a password you may have to enter bob as a UID and then and ickyigh as a password each time you ftp or receive
e-mail on our servers. Your account name on our system will be that name (bob) with a number following if your have another service beyond your "master." If
your e-mail address of bobbydoallwell@mysite.com was the fourth account to be setup, then the account name would be bob4. This information
was given to you over the phone, by e-mail, or through your control panel. If you do not have that information available, check your control panel. You may call OfficeOnWeb if you are having trouble entering
your control panel. Ensure that SPA is NOT selected. Click Next.
- Finally, it will ask for an account name that Outlook Express will use to refer to this particular account.
It doesn't really matter very much what you choose, so you can choose whatever you want as the name. We recommend something like "OfficeOnWeb e-mail account".
- If you want to log onto your ISP and then check your mail, choose the option "I will establish connection manually".
If you want Outlook Express to dial into your ISP for you, then choose "Connect using my phone line". (If you choose the latter, you will need to contact your ISP for instructions on configuring
your dialer.) If we are your ISP, we have online instructions at:
http://support.officeonweb.com/domain_server_numbers.htm
- Click on "Finish" and then on "Close".
- Now to retrieve your mail, open the Outlook Express program, choose "Tools" from the menubar and
select "Receive All". You can also use the "Send and Receive" button if it is on your toolbar. Remember, you must always "Send and Receive" before you
are able to send any messages out. If you are using an old version of Outlook Express, it is possible to get caught in a loop of send fist then receive. If this is the case, we advise you update your Outlook
Express or use another more professional e-mail program.
Footnote: Some releases of Outlook Express contain an error that prevents you from sending out e-mail
If you experience this problem, you may need to update your mail prgram or use another more professional system to overcome this issue.
