Retrieving E-mail with Outlook 98
This page will teach you how to set up Outlook 98 to retrieve e-mail from your OfficeOnWeb POP accounts. To configure
Outlook, follow the instructions below.
- Open Microsoft Outlook 98 and choose "Tools" from the menu bar.
- Choose "Accounts" and click on the mail tab when the "Internet Accounts" manager window
appears.
- Click on the "Add" button and then on "Mail". The Internet Connection Wizard will walk
you through the setup process.
- First, it will ask for a display name. Normally your mail has these headers:
to: joe@schmoe.com
from: bob@yourbiz.com
but choosing a display name of "Robert G. Davis" will tell Outlook to write this at the top of your outgoing mail messages:
to: Joe@schmoe.com
from: Robert G. Davis <bob@yourbiz.com>
- Then, the wizard will ask for the e-mail address that you want people to reply to. If you type bob@yourbiz.com,
that would result in the text you see above being written on all of your outgoing mail.
- After that, you will be asked for your server information. Your incoming mail server is a POP3 and
its name is the same as your domain name (if your Internet address is "www.yourbiz.com",
then your POP3 server's name would be "yourbiz.com").
- The fourth step in the process is that the wizard will ask about your SMTP server for outgoing mail. We recommend using the SMTP server of your ISP (OfficeOnWeb
is smtp.safepages.com), but if that fails to operate properly, you may try to use your domain name here instead i.e.n "yourbiz.com".
(If your ISP is AOL, you should use your domain name should remain as "yourbiz.com"
as your SMTP server name.) If your system requires a defined smtp server, try the anme of your smtp server. For OfficeOnWeb dial in accounts, it is smtp.safepages.com/
- Fifth, Outlook will ask for your account name and password. When you signed up for service with
Office On Web you either chose or were given a user identification name (UID) to access ftp and telnet. For example, you may have to enter bob
as a UID and then your password each time you ftp to our servers. Your account name on our system will be that name (bob) with a number following. If your e-mail
address of robertdowell@yourbiz.com was the fourth account to be setup and your UID is bob, then the account name would be
bob4. This information was given to you over the phone or by e-mail, but if you do not have that information available, call Office On Web. Next enter your password,
which was chosen/assigned at the same time as your UID. Then ensure that SPA is not selected and click next.
- Finally, it will ask for an account name that Outlook Express will use to refer to this particular account.
It doesn't really matter very much what you choose, so you can choose whatever you want as the name. We recommend something like "OfficeOnWeb E-mail account".
- If you want to log onto your ISP and then check your mail, choose the option "I will establish connection manually".
If you want Outlook Express to dial into your ISP for you, then choose "Connect using my phone line". (If you choose the latter, you will need to contact your ISP for instructions on configuring
your dialer.) If we are your ISP, we have online instructions at:
http://support.officeonweb.com/domain_server_numbers.htm
- Click on "Finish" and then on "Close".
- Now to retrieve your mail, open Outlook, choose "Tools" from the menubar and
select "Send and Receive". You can also use the "Send and Receive" button if it is on your toolbar. Remember, you must always "Send and Receive" before
you are able to send any messages out.
