Retrieving E-mail with Outlook 97

This page will teach you how to set up Outlook 97 to retrieve e-mail from your OfficeOnWeb POP accounts. Outlook 97 is more than eight years out of date. We advise against its use. To configure Outlook 97, follow the instructions below and -- take your lumps.

We will use the example of an account with OfficeOnWeb with the following info:

Domain name: yourbiz.com
       Userid: myuid
       E-mail: firstinitiallastname@yourbiz.com

  • Open Microsoft Outlook 97 and choose "Tools" from the menu bar.

  • Choose "Services".

  • Click on the "Services" tab.

  • "Internet Mail" should be one of the information services listed there.

    • If it is not, click on the "Add" button, then highlight "Internet Mail", and click on "OK".
    • If it is, highlight "Internet Mail", and click on the "Properties" button.

  • In the "Internet Mail" dialog box, click on the "General" tab.  Fill in the boxes as follows:

    • Full name:  Your First and Last Name
    • E-mail address:  firstinitiallastname@yourbiz.com
    • Internet Mail Server:  yourbiz.com
    • Account Name:  myuid
    • Password:  Password selected

  • Next, click on the "Connection" tab.

  • If you would prefer to log onto your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and then check your mail, choose "Connect using the network". If you want Outlook to dial into your ISP for you, then choose "Connect using the modem". (If you choose the latter, you will need to contact your ISP for instructions on configuring your dialer.) If we are your ISP, we have online instructions at:

            http://support.officeonweb.com/domain_server_numbers.htm

  • Click on "Apply".

  • Click on "OK".

  • Click on "OK" again.

  • Now to retrieve your mail, in the Outlook window, choose "Tools" from the menu bar.

  • Then select "Check for New Mail". Remember also that each time you open Outlook you must check for new mail before being able to send any mail out. if you lose your connection, you can get caught in a loop which will require you to copy all outgoing messages in another directory, receive all messages, then regenerate the outgoing message. If you lose your connection due to bad phone lines or other reasons, you will need to do it all again.
