Setting up Dial Up on Windows XP

Procedure

 

  1. Click on Start and highlight All Programs. Scroll up to Accessories and scroll over to Communications and click on the New Connection Wizard.
  2. A Location Information window will open. Here you will enter your country/region (United States is default), area code, and a number to access an outside line if applicable. Click OK to continue.
  3. A Phone and Modem Options window will appear. This window will display the settings you have chosen from the previous step. Click OK to proceed to the wizard.
  4. The New Connection Wizard window opens. This wizard will help guide you in creating a new connection for dial up. Click Next to proceed.
  5. This window allows you to select the network connection type. By default, Connect to the Internet is already chosen for you. Click Next to proceed.
  6. This window allows you to select how you would like to connect to the Internet. Click the second radio button located to the left of Set up my connection manually and click Next.
  7. This window allows you to choose how you would physically connect to the Internet. By default, Connect using a dial-up modem is chosen, click Next to continue.
  8. This particular window allows you to input a name for your dial-up connection. Click once in the box and type a name that signifies your connection. Note: If you have multiple dial-up connections, you may want to assign specific names (e.g., oow1049@surf.net) for your connections. Click Next once you have entered in a name.
  9. This window allows you to input the number for dialing into the university. If you do not know what number to enter, click here for our list of dial-up numbers. Dial-up Numbers Once you have located and entered the number click Next.
  10. In this window, enter in your user id (oow####@domain) and password (whatuselected), then select which options you would like to associate this connection with. When you have finished click Next.
  11. Lastly, click the check box located to the left of Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop, and click Finish. Your dial-up connection is now created.
  12. Now that your dial-up connection is created, you may need to setup your modem for this particular connection. Click on Start and highlight All Programs. Scroll up to Accessories and scroll over to Communications and click on the Network Connections.
  13. The Network Connections window will pop open. Locate under the Dial-up section, you should see the connection you have just created.
  14. Once you have located your connection, Right Click once on the connection, scroll down and click Properties (see above).
  15. The General tab is the first tab opened. Make sure your modem is displayed in the Connect using: box. Locate the Phone number category and make sure the number reads what you have chosen.
  16. Next, click on the Networking tab. Make sure the Type of dial-up server is PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet. Next, click and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click the Properties button.
  17. The General tab in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) window opens. Keep the default setting Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain an DNS server address automatically. Click the OK button when finished. Click OK once more to exit out of your dial-up configuration.
  18. Now you should be looking at your desktop and network connections. Click the X on network connections to close it.
  19. Now locate the little ICON symbolizing your connection that you created and double click on it. Enter in your username and password, and click Connect. When you see two little computers drop down into the bottom right hand corner of your computer screen, you are connected and ready to browse the web.
When you first connect, you will see a message like the one above.
